Tidings In The Rough is the brand new album from Yellow Couch Music, a diverse collective of like-minded musicians from around the world. Founded and led by drummer/producer, Layton Weedeman, Yellow Couch Music’s colorful and eclectic sound connects the dots between hip-hop, jazz, R&B, rock, and world music. While Tidings In The Rough is a direct product of Weedeman’s vision and efforts, the album’s 10 tracks are enriched by a stellar cast of guest vocalists and instrumentalists. The process of creating each song on the album was deeply collaborative. Weedeman would start by sketching out a rough idea, then tapping into the community of artists around him to flesh each idea out into fully formed compositions.
“Despite having studied music theory, I find I’m better at singing parts out loud rather than composing them on piano or another melodic instrument.” Weedeman explained. “Everything starts in my head, and I’m grateful to work with musicians who can translate my vocal interpretations into notes.”
The album is stacked with contributions from Scienz of Life emcee, John Robinson, saxophonist Lars Haake, R&B singer-songwriter, NYALLAH, singer, poet, H. Alonzo Jennings, Estephanie, bassist Grant Zubritzky (Brittany Howard, Tegan & Sara, Dua Lipa) and many more. The project was also mixed by Pat Van Dyke (Benny Sings, Mayer Hawthorne, Sadat X), Keith Rice (Lilblackkids w/ Georgia Anne Muldrow), Jeff Berner (Psychic TV, Kurt Vile, Pharoahe Monch), Kevin Ramsay (Henry Threadgil, Prince Harvey) and drummer/producer Jay Mumford (fka J-Zone). Tidings In The Rough’s breezy, soulful tone is set from the opening track, “Am I More Than Enough?!!!??!” featuring Estephanie. A gorgeous, slow-brewing tune about overcompensation and the fear of rejection, the song is anchored by a deep bassline and uplifted by Kirk Schoenherr’s tasteful, evocative guitar playing.

Alongside the R&B and hip-hop elements, Tidings In The Rough has no shortage of jazz compositions that display the collective’s instrumental gifts. “No Preface” is a bouncy Afro-Cuban groove featuring a beautifully improvised vibraphone solo by Grady Tesch. “Somewhere Along The Lines” is an experiment with Latin rhythms and jazz that results in an introspective tune that’s as dreamy as it is enveloping.
“Fool Stop” is a smooth, jazzy hip-hop tune featuring JSWISS, John Robinson & Estephanie. Over a trumpet and keyboard-led groove, JSWISS and Robinson trade fiery verses that touch on self-awareness and personal growth. In order to secure JSWISS and Robinson’s help, Weedeman once again tapped into the musical community for help.
“Growing up, I was a huge fan of Rawkus Records, and Lyricist Lounge Volume 1 was one of those pivotal albums that shaped my love for hip-hop. I absolutely loved that record, and it’s wild to think that now, John Robinson—who’s featured on that release—is now contributing a verse on a track I produced. I initially felt like I was “cold calling” John when I reached out for a verse, but we instantly clicked, and he was inspired to write.”
Needing another verse to pair with Robinson’s, Weedeman tracked down JSWISS to recruit him to appear on the track.
“I still needed one more dope emcee, so I tracked down JSWISS after hearing his work with Grady’s band Momentum. ”When I reached out, he was looking to collaborate with new artists, so the timing was perfect, and he loved the beat. It felt like my music resonated with him.”
With tracks like “The Wherewithal”, “Yellow Nights”, and “Somewhere Along The Lines”, Tidings In The Rough is a tender, multifaceted meditation on love, loss and the resilience of the human spirit. Stepped in jazz, rich with soul and empowered by hip-hop, Yellow Couch Music’s debut is a heartfelt and cosmopolitan mix of groovy sounds. - John Morrison
